Winter storm watch for Central Georgia
Winter storm watch for Central Georgia

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for all of central Georgia beginning Tuesday morning until Wednesday afternoon.

A wintry mix is expected for central and southern parts of the state beginning Tuesday afternoon. Rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow are likely Tuesday evening until Wednesday morning.

A rain/sleet mix is likely to begin Tuesday with freezing rain expected anywhere surface temperatures are below 32. As temperatures drop, snow will begin to take over north of Macon/Warner Robins by Tuesday evening. Rain/freezing rain/sleet to convert to snow through much of Middle Georgia Tuesday evening into early Wednesday. 1-3" of snow appears likely across the northern two-thirds of our viewing area (including Macon, Warner Robins, and Milledgeville). This same area would see less than 0.1" of ice leading to a few slick roads.

Further south and east, I expect a longer duration of freezing rain into Wednesday morning. Some areas (including Eastman and McRae) may see more than 0.25" of ice with minor accumulations of sleet/snow on top of that.

You'll see the impact on driving Wednesday morning. Any moisture that does accumulate at the surface has the potential to freeze as surface temperatures will drop below freezing Tuesday night. Downed trees and power lines are possible for areas seeing more ice (generally southeast of Macon and Warner Robins).

This forecast is still subject to change. Be sure to check back frequently for the most up-to-date information.
