ATLANTA (January 14, 2011) – Sen. Johnny Grant (R-Milledgeville) has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee for the 2011-2012 Term by the Senate Committee on Assignments.  Sen. Grant will also serve on the Appropriations, Health and Human Services, State Institutions and Property, and Higher Education committees.

“I am honored to serve the people of Georgia in my capacity as a member of these important committees,” said Sen. Grant.  “I am especially honored to be named Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. The safety of our citizens is one of the core responsibilities of government and I look forward to working with the many men and women throughout our state that work hard every day to make our communities and our state safe and secure.”

“Senator Johnny Grant is widely considered as one the finest legislators in Georgia. I can think of no better person to serve as Chairman of the Public Safety Committee. His work ethic and honest approach to government has earned him great respect among public safety leaders across Georgia,” said Sen. Bill Cowsert, Republican Caucus Chairman.

“After numerous meetings, and careful consideration of the talents and expertise of each of our Senators, I feel strongly that we have created strong, durable committees that will help to cultivate legislation that is beneficial to all Georgians,” said President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams. “By using this transparent, extensive process, we can ensure that we are working together and maximizing all of our efforts in order to bring Georgia through these hard times and into a prosperous future.”

“By giving the committee selection process the attention it deserves, I am confident that the result will be public policy that stimulates our economy, puts money back into the pockets of hardworking citizens, and improves the quality of life for all Georgians,” said Majority Leader Chip Rogers. “Though we have many hard decisions to make, we must put politics aside to make Georgia a state where families, businesses, and communities can grow and thrive.”

The 152nd Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly convened Monday, Jan. 10 at the State Capitol.
