13WMAZ Declares Tuesday Operation Back to School

Today is Operation Back to School Day!

13WMAZ be collecting your donations at Wal-Marts in Macon, Warner Robins, Perry, Forsyth, Dublin and Milledgeville from noon to 7 p.m. today.

**These donations will be given to organizations to disperse in the communities they are collected. You can donate school supplies to the cause, but supplies will not actually be given out at the individual Wal-marts. 

What to do with Your Old Clunker of a Computer

If your first computer ever, or cell phone for that matter, is just collecting dust in the attic, consider this local option.

Through Digital Bridges' partnership with the Baldwin County Environmental Compliance Office, the Knight Community Innovation Center is a year-round collection point for old and obsolete computers and consumer electronics. 

Digital Bridges accepts these items, at no charge:

Baldwin County Soccer Registration Begins

From July 18 - August 16 you can register your kids for Fall 2011.

Late Registration  is from August 17 - 19.

Player evaluations take place August 20 and the season begins Sept. 17.

Convention & Visitors Bureau Receives High Marks


Milledgeville-Baldwin County Convention & Visitors Bureau earned the status of Bronze Level Benchmark of Excellence GACVB Certification. 

That's according to a Milledgeville CVB news release.

The Benchmark of Excellence Certification (BEC) program presents the opportunity for destination marketing organizations in the state of Georgia to measure their practices and achievements against a defined set of competencies which serve to increase the overall professionalism and effectiveness of the organization. 

A CVB who decides to seek the Benchmark of Excellence Certification is enhancing their organizations leadership development, providing a direction for professional development plans, both for the organization and individuals within the organization, and recognizing their CVB/DMO exhibits industry best practices. 

Grants Announced for Middle Georgia Preservation Projects

A total of $33,000 in grants will be given to support preservation projects in Middle Georgia.

That's according to a GCSU news release.

These grants come from The Milledgeville Chapter of the Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board of Trustees.

Curator of the Old Governor's Mansion at Georgia College announced the grant recipients:


  • $2,406 to Georgia’s Old Capital Museum for audio tours;
  • $1,300 to Steffen Thomas Museum of Art in Madison for collection conservation supplies;
  • $14,500 to Macon Cemetery Preservation Inc. for Linwood Cemetery restoration;
  • $2,500 to Sparta-Hancock Historical Society for Graves Barn restoration;
  • $2,790 to Friends of the Cannonball House in Macon for kitchen window restoration;
  • $4,500 to Wilkinson County Historical Society for Gordon Old City Jail restoration; and
  • $4,990 to Holt School Inc. in Jones County for Holt School restoration.

The design of the official First Friday logo by the First Friday Committee is another step in establishing the event in downtown Milledgeville, a news release says.

The logo is intended to represent the versatility of the event: art, music and fun!
