Baldwin County Commissioners Set to Meet Tuesday

The next Baldwin County Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting is set for Tuesday, February 5 at 6 p.m.

Andalusia Farm to Host February Lectures

Andalusia farm, the Milledgeville farmhouse where Flannery O'Connor lived and wrote, hosts February lectures on Sundays from 3-5 p.m.

Bruce Gentry kicks off the lecture series with a lecture entitled "The Influence of Carson McCullers and Erskine Caldwell on Flannery O'Connor." Gentry is the editor of the Flannery O'Connor Review at Georgia College and Chair of the Foundation's Scholars Council, according to the Andalusia website.

That's on Sunday, February 3, from 3-5 p.m.

The February Lecture Series is listed on Trailfest 2013 as part of the Southern Literary Trail.

Georgia College Department of Public Safety Awarded $10K Grant

The Georgia College Department of Public Safety received a partnership grant of $10,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

Baldwin County Jobless Rate Released

The jobless rate for Baldwin County in December 2012 was 12 percent.

Baldwin was one of 67 Georgia counties that had a jobless rate of 10 percent or greater.

The jobless rate in December 2012 was also up for metro Macon.

According to a state news release, unemployment rose to 9.2 percent from November's 8.7 percent rate, but it was down from December 2011 when the rate was 9.5 percent.

Officials claim the rise comes from a combination of factors, including a "slight increase" in new layoffs and a reduction in the area work force.

The uptick reflects a similar statewide trend. However, the jobless rate across Georgia only rose one-tenth of percentage point while metro Macon's rate jumped five-tenths of a percentage point.
