Milledgeville Main Street Receives 2011 National Accreditation

 Milledgeville Main Street has been designated as an accredited National Main Street program for 2011.

That's according to a Milledgeville Main Street news release.

Milledgeville Main Street receives the national accreditation for meeting the national commercial district revitalization performance standards.

The organization’s performance is annually evaluated by Georgia Department of Community Affairs, which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. 

 

Over the past year, Milledgeville Main Street has implemented a new monthly event First Friday, put on another Deep Roots Festival, inspired downtown investment, completed another fruitful season of the Farmers’ Market and more.

Chainsaw Carving Bash to Benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

See over 20 chainsaw sculptors from across the United States, England and Peru perform their skill.

It's open at 541 Hungerford Rd. in Gray from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Admission is free, and carvers sculptures will be on sale. Portion of proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Huddle House Agrees to Comply with Minimum Wage Law

 

ATLANTA – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division has identified significant violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and has obtained remedies for them at 28 Huddle House restaurants in Georgia, Missouri and West Virginia. Corporate franchisor Huddle House Inc. has agreed to facilitate compliance among all its franchisee-operated restaurants as well as to assist the division in promoting industrywide compliance with the FLSA.

That's according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release.

In addition, minimum and overtime back wages totaling $60,594 will be paid to 128 employees. Finally, the division assessed $48,317 in civil money penalties for repeat and child labor violations.

Andalusia Holds Author's Book Signing

 

The Foundation will sponsor a reading and book signing by Joe Samuel Starnes at the Mary Vinson Memorial Library in Milledgeville on Friday, November 4, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Starnes's new novel, Fall Line, will be published by NewSouth Books in October. 

The novel is set in 1955, when floodgates are poised to slam shut on a concrete dam straddling the Oogasula River, creating a lake that will submerge a forgotten crossroads and thousands of acres of woodlands in rural Georgia.

Fall Line unfolds in one day's action, as viewed through the eyes of Elmer Blizzard, a troubled ex-deputy; Mrs. McNulty, a lonely widow who refuses to leave her doomed shack by the river; and a rapacious politician, State Senator Aubrey Terrell, for whom the new lake is named.

10:00am a Moment of Silence at the Bobcat Head on front campus of GC (We are trying to get that at other places around the community.)

10:00am-2:00pm Tribute Projects (Small passive service projects) honoring the victims on campus at GC
