Baldwin Woman Charged in Newborn's Death | News
A Baldwin County woman faces criminal charges after investigators found a dead newborn buried in a back yard.
That's according to Baldwin County sheriff Bill Massee.
The infant was found buried behind a home at 298 Lakemere Lane. That's off Highway 212 near Lake Sinclair.
"Last Wednesday around 7 pm at night, our central dispatch got a call for a homeowner around Lakemere who said he had found a body of an infant child buried in a shallow grave," said Massee.
He said 23-year-old Brittany Palmer faces charges of making false statements and concealing a death.
Massee said the person who made the phone call was Palmer's father.
Massee said investigators believe Palmer gave birth without assistance at the home.
"(The infant) had been born what we consider to be full term at the home, she had an unassisted birth," said Massee. "During the birth, the child we think possibly drowned, the child was born in the bathtub in a area of the home.
Massee said as far as he knows no one knew she was pregnant.
He said they're awaiting autopsy results on the newborn and will discuss further possible charges against Palmer.
A man who identified himself as Brittany Palmer's father declined comment today. He said it's been a difficult time for the family and they plan a memorial service today for the newborn.
