Thousands Celebrate at Georgia War Veterans Home

Thousands gathered to celebrate Veterans Day at the the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville.

The event featured a marching band, color guard, and a parade of veterans.  It was a positive event far from what Macon native Eddie Farr says he went through when he came home from his two tours in the Vietnam War.

"I flew into New York City, and they jumped me, and beat me up. Not enough to put me in the hospital, but I was pretty well beat up."

Farr has been living at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville for the last two years, and Monday, he joined other veterans in the event.

William Stubba of Eatonton, a Korean War veteran, makes it point to come support his brothers in arms.

"You see them at the parade, some of them mobile, some in wheelchairs, you've got to give them credit for their efforts that they're out there, still proud to be Americans."

Ernie Simons of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service says while the event was successful, people should be mindful of veterans year round.

"A lot of the guys here are from other places around Georgia. Their families can't come and see about them as they would like to, so anytime the community can reach out and come out and visit with these guys, it means a lot to them."

Simons says the home always accepts visitors, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up.
