There's a general conception that the Internal Revenue Services is too understaffed at tax time to go after anyone but high rollers and blatant cheats.

Don't believe it.

While it's true that the IRS only audits a small percentage of returns, government officials are getting smarter about which taxpayers are the likeliest to be overstating deductions or underreporting income.

Area unemployment rates fall

Central Georgia's unemployment rate continues to dip, falling from 7.8 to 7.7 percent from December to January.

The rate has declined mostly because the amount of new layoffs decreased by 41 percent, according to a release.

In January 2013, one year ago, the unemployment rate was 9.3 percent.

Eatonton commemorates 150th Civil War anniversary with new exhibit

New items will be on display for visitors at the Old School History museum come this month.

When you visit the Old School History Museum this month, you'll be able to see documents pardoning an Eatonton Confederate sympathizer with Andrew Johnson and William Seward's signatures as well as discharge papers for another Eatonton soldier from the 1860s.

Then, in November, crews will set up a reenactment of camp life in Eatonton.

The museum is at 305 North Madison Avenue.

Six people, all Republicans, have qualified to run for the 10th Congressional District seat. That distirct includes Baldwin, Hancock, Washington and Johnson counties, and Paul Broun is vacating that seat to run for U.S. Senate.
