How to Help Firefighters in Okefonekee Swamp

The Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce is participating in an initiative sponsored by the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce requesting all of the Chambers in Georgia for help for the firefighters battling several blazes in the Okefenokee Swamp.

Items needed:

  • socks
  • t-shirts
  • liquid lip balm
  • bandanas
  • individual packages of antacids and pain relievers
  • sunscreen
  • bug spray
  • dryer sheets
  • hand sanitizer
  • eye wash
  • snacks for when they do not have time to rest for a meal (no chocolate as it melts).
  • They also need donations to provide meals for the firefighters.

Checks should be made payable to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Nature Near You

Nature Near You

Sounds silly to have to seek out nature when it appears to be all around us.

But www.naturefind.com has taken it upon themselves to be searchable so that you can find nature near you, where you can enjoy it. (Driving by a crowd of pine trees on your way to work doesn't count, sorry.)

Georgia College Campus Offers Sanctuary for Birds

“Our campus is one of the best areas around for birds,” said Dr. Bob Chandler, professor of biological and environmental science. “They are attracted especially to our flowering plants and our really old trees where they can roost and perch.”

The campus is home to at least 15 to 25 bird species.

Students, faculty and staff alike show a great interest in their overhead friends.

Bird feeders erected across campus supplement the bountiful natural food for the feathered flyers.
