Georgia College Department of Public Safety Awarded $10K Grant

The Georgia College Department of Public Safety received a partnership grant of $10,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The incentive grant, which will last through Sept. 2013, is designed for smaller law enforcement agencies that have partnered with GOHS and excelled in participating in highway safety initiatives as well as making their communities safe during the previous year.

“This was the first time we had applied for the grant,” said Sgt. Michael Baker of Georgia College University Police. “We’re are pleased to received the money that will in turn help us keep people safe on the roads.”

The department purchased several tools including roadside breathalyzers, citation holders, gear bags and flashlights to direct traffic.

“Our new equipment will help officers do their jobs more efficiently and effectively,” said Baker.

This grant rewards agencies for their proactive approach to traffic safety and provides them with the necessary tools to continue their efforts.

Agencies must meet several criteria to receive the award. They must report enforcement data to GOHS, participate in meetings of the local traffic enforcement network, host network meetings and submit applications to GOHS’ annual law enforcement awards program, Governor’s Challenge.
