Sanders Family Returns to Milledgeville with "Smoke on the Mountain" | Community Spirit
Allied Arts and the Milledgeville Players team up once again to bring the Sanders family and Smoke on the Mountain to Milledgeville.
Set in the depression days of the 1930s, Smoke on the Mountain introduces the singing Sanders Family, who perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs for the members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, NC.
Pastor Mervin Oglethorpe, a poor young preacher trying to help his flock through tough times, welcomes the Sanders Family to the church as a leap into “modern times.” Little does he know what the evening holds as the family share their individual stories and beliefs. With the audience serving as the members of the congregation, the result is a funny, inspiring, and sometimes hysterical ride.
The score of Smoke on the Mountain consists of twenty-seven gospel tunes, all of which could have been performed in the 1930’s. There is a mixture of energetic rousing numbers, plaintive hymns, and soulful praise songs. The songs vary from the well known "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Fly Away," to the more obscure and offbeat "Filling Station" and "Christian Cowboy".
The story was conceived by Alan Bailey and written by Connie Ray, and ran for 14 months off Broadway. Director John Geist said, “We’ve had so many calls to bring back this production. It’s a terrific little musical that puts the Sanders Family together with Pastor Oglethorpe as they try their best to survive the evening of surprises! Most of the original cast members from the Players’ earlier production are returning. ”
