Flannery O'Connor Conference: 'Startling Figures'

The 2011 Flannery O'Connor Conference, "Startling Figures" takes place April 13 through 16.

The conference title "Startling Figures" comes from a line in Flannery O'Connor's essay, "The Fiction Writer and His Country" a Georgia College news release says.

In the essay, O'Connor explains, "When you can assume that your audience holds the same beliefs you do, you can relax a little and use more normal means of talking to it; when you have to assume that it does not, then you have to make your vision apparent by shock-to the hard of hearing you shout, and for the almost-blind you draw large and startling figures.”

In addition to the guest speakers, there will be tours of the O'Connor's farm home, Andalusia.

The 2011 Flannery O’Connor Conference is organized by the Georgia College Flannery O’Connor Studies Program as part of Southern Literary Trail’s Trailfest 2011, that celebrates writers of classic southern literature in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, the news release says.
