“Dracula: The Ballet” premiered in the fall of 2006. Phyllis Papa's choreography is based on the story of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The story takes place in 15th Century Eastern Europe when a young lawyer, Jonathan Harker, is captured and imprisoned by Dracula. Inspired by a painting, Dracula goes to London to meet Jonathan's fiancée Mina. While in London, he drains the life of Mina's best friend Lucy Westenera. Dr. Van Helsing leads a crusade to free Mina and the world from Dracula. Dracula: The Ballet has been received by sold out audiences over several US tours. The Atlantic City Ballet Theatre is comprised of a culturally diverse corps of 24 versatile dancers from around the world. These exceptional dancers have earned national acclaim for their technical expertise and clarity, exuberant stage presence, and having the required force, delicacy and energy necessary to interpret various musical scores and ultimately deliver performances of exceptional quality. They hail from four continents-North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.
The founder and artistic director of ACBT, Phyllis Papa, began her training at the Royal Ballet Academy. At the age of thirteen, Miss Papa became a charter member of the Princeton Regional Ballet Company. Miss Papa’s professional career continued when American Ballet Theatre invited Miss Papa to join their company and she toured extensively with the company. Papa was later invited to audition for the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, Denmark, becoming the first American ever accepted into the company. She was the only foreigner ever to be offered a life-long contract and became well known for her work with them.
The Atlantic City Ballet Theatre’s residency in Milledgeville is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly. GCA is a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
