Pine Needle Basket Workshop

A beginning pine needle basket making workshop will be offered Saturday, February 22. Instructor Amy Clark-Davis, who learned under basket maker Anne Brickhouse, will teach the ancient coiling technique used by Native Americans since pre-Columbian times. Participants will learn how to weave a coiled pine needle basket including how to prepare needles, basic stitching, addition of thread when weaving, and forming the basket walls. Interested persons are encouraged to register early as space is limited to six students, ensuring time for individual attention for each student. The registration fee includes all supplies.

Students will have fun completing 4 small paintings, and a number of exercises while learning about color, style, value, detail and overall composition in this watercolor class. Beginners will enjoy trying their hand at a variety of techniques which will include layering, saving whites, controlling edges, and adding depth for an outstanding introduction into the possibilities of the medium -
Learn how to capture the beauty and radiance of watercolor in this watercolor for beginners workshop—even if you’ve never painted before! Dana will provide you with realistic watercolor instruction, watercolor tips, and take you through the essential techniques and concepts of watercolor painting. You’ll learn how to use your watercolor materials to create washes, work wet-into-wet, suggest value changes, establish color and light, and execute stunning compositions and much more. For those of you wondering how to watercolor like the pros, this is the perfect introductory course for you!

Simple Origami and Kirigami

Students in this class will learn the basics of origami and kirigami to make simple shapes. The word Origami is Japanese in origin; oru meaning "to fold", and kami meaning "paper." Kirigami is a variation of origami that includes cutting, or “kiru,” of the paper. Using square sheets of special paper, students will learn basic folding techniques by making simple cranes, holiday trees and containers. Using stencils, students will cut paper into shapes to fold. Class instructor Dorothy Brown is the former chair of Georgia College Art Department and has over 30 years of experience teaching and making art in Milledgeville. Nearly any object can be recreated with origami, including animals, flowers, and holiday symbols. The registration fee includes all supplies for this workshop.

Chair Bottoming Workshop

Do you have one of grandma’s old bottomless kitchen chairs? Brian Renko and Randy Cannon will teach you how to weave a new chair bottom for it in the herringbone pattern during this one day workshop. Allied Arts will provide flat cane and all materials. Each participant will complete one chair during the workshop and will leave with the knowledge and skills to continue the craft of chair bottoming. Bring a chair that has round seat stretchers with no arms or rockers. Call Allied Arts if you need to purchase a chair on which to weave.

Get hands-on experience using a Logan mat cutter. You will learn the necessary skills to cut professional, simple mats and the perfectly aligned double mats to attractively display your artwork. The mechanics of measuring and cutting the mat opening will be covered in this class. Participants will learn how to custom fit art work to a variety of frame sizes. Participants in this workshop will be allowed to schedule studio time and use Allied Arts equipment for a nominal fee. Call for supply list.
